How Circle works

Short answer

Circle simulates a whole social network around one real person, you. You choose a world, create a profile, and post. A cast of AI characters, each with a face, a job, a personality and a memory, reads your bio and your posts, then likes, comments, follows, gossips and sends you DMs. Every reply is written in the moment, and characters remember what happened.

What happens when you start a game?

The first screen greets you with one line: "You're the main character. Become whoever you want in your world." Then you pick a world. Worlds are grouped into three rows.

  • Official worlds, made by the Circle team. The main one is Road to 1M, where you start from zero and aim for a million followers.
  • Community worlds, made by other players and reviewed before they are listed, like Westbrook University or Pets Got Phones.
  • My worlds, the ones you built yourself.

Each world has its own cast of characters and its own tone. A game lives inside one world, and you can run as many games as you like at the same time. Circle calls them lives.

How do you create your profile?

Your profile is who you are in that world. You choose:

  • Woman or man.
  • A role, picked from illustrated cards (singer, rapper, model, NBA star, NFL quarterback, heiress, billionaire, tech founder, TikToker and more, depending on the world) or written yourself.
  • A name, from which your @handle is generated.
  • A bio. This is the most important line in the game. Every character reads it and takes it as true, and it shapes how people interact with you.
  • A photo, either the role's portrait or your own picture from the camera or gallery.

Next, Circle suggests people to follow (at least two), and asks for your first post. That step cannot be skipped. While you write it, the people you followed are already posting, so the feed is alive when you arrive.

What happens when you post?

A post is up to 280 characters of text, with an optional photo and @mentions. Once it's up:

  • Characters like it, comment, ask to follow you and sometimes DM you about it.
  • If there's a photo, they react to what is actually in it.
  • An unseen crowd beyond the cast adds likes and followers too, and posts with a photo reach more of them.
  • You can reply to comments, and characters reply back in threads.

Tap Stats on your own post to see the accounts it reached, the likes, and the followers gained or lost. Each post gets a stamped verdict compared with your usual posts.

VerdictWhat it means
ViralFar above your usual reach. Expect a wave of new followers.
SmashA big win compared with your usual posts.
Good postBetter than usual.
DecentAbout your usual.
FlopBelow usual. A flop can cost you followers.
First postYour very first post, the baseline for everything after.

Follower milestones are 10, 50, 100, 250, 500, 1K, 2.5K, 5K, 10K, 25K, 50K, 100K, 250K, 500K and 1M. Each one triggers a full-screen celebration.

How does the feed work?

The Home tab is a feed of posts and stories from your world, with a stories rail on top. Tap Refresh feed and the people you follow post. You see it happen live ("Léa is writing a post", "is posting a story") until you're all caught up.

A Grow your circle row suggests new people to follow, and the Search tab shows a grid of everyone in the world, filterable by your own characters and your relationships. The heart icon opens Activity, which lists likes, comments, mentions, follow requests, new followers from a post, and followers lost after one.

Who are the characters?

Every account besides yours is a fictional character written by AI. Each one has:

  • a face, a name and a handle,
  • an age (always 18 or older), a job and interests,
  • a backstory and a personality,
  • a memory of what happened with you and with others.

Characters act on their own. They follow you or ask to, start conversations, post, comment on each other's posts, and talk about what you did. Nothing is pre-written. There are no dialogue trees, and two players in the same world will never get the same game.

Characters treat your bio as fact. Say you're a retired pop star and people will act like they've heard your songs.

How do DMs work?

The Messages tab holds one-to-one conversations. Characters often write first, about a post, a comment or something from your bio. You can send photos with a caption, delete your own messages, and see "Seen" and typing indicators.

The dice button in the message box starts truth or dare:

  • Truth. The character answers you in private.
  • Post dare. If they take it, it goes up as a post on their profile.
  • Story dare. Same idea, as a story.

What is the Thoughts screen?

Every character's profile has a thought bubble. Tap it to open "What's on their mind", a list of their memories and intentions, each tagged with who it's about (often you) and how long ago it happened. It's the backstage of the simulation. Only you can see it, and characters never read it.

How do relationships work?

From a character's profile or the top of a DM, tap Add a relationship to answer one question, "Who are they to you?". There are about 40 options in 9 groups, and the character behaves accordingly. Relationships belong to one profile only, so a stranger from the comments can become your crush in one life and your rival in another.

GroupExamples
CoupleGirlfriend or boyfriend, wife or husband
More than friendsMutual crush, they're crazy about me, my match, my date, it's complicated
FriendsBest friend, friend, childhood friend
FamilySibling, cousin, parent, aunt or uncle, grandparent, in-law
Around youNeighbor, roommate
WorkCoworker, boss, business partner
OnlineMy #1 fan, my hater, online friend
ExEx who wants me back, ex who ghosted me, ex who's not over me, first love
RivalryRival, rival at work, romantic rival, rival since school, competitor

What is daily energy?

Everything the characters write for you, posts, comments, replies, DMs, stories and game rounds, draws on one daily energy gauge. It is shared by all your profiles on the phone and refills completely every day at 5 AM local time. Unused energy doesn't carry over and can't be bought in packs.

When the gauge is empty, characters pause until the refill ("Maya will reply once your energy refills"). Nothing is deleted and everything stays readable. Circle can send one optional notification when your energy is back.

Circle+ is an optional subscription that multiplies the daily energy. It unlocks nothing else. See how Circle+ works.

Where is your game saved, and is it private?

  • Your games, posts, profiles and DMs are saved on your phone.
  • There is no sign-up. An anonymous account tied to your device holds your energy and your subscription.
  • No other player can see your game. Community worlds are shared, your games inside them are not.
  • The text of your game is sent to an AI model provider so the characters can answer, so don't type anything you wouldn't want to leave your phone.
  • Characters need an internet connection to reply.
